Replication, virus-host interactions, and protection in coronavirus

Replication, virus-host interactions, and protection in coronavirus 1.67/5 (3 Reviews )

Human infections of the lower respiratory tract represent a growing health problem. In fact, the annual number of hospital admissions due to pneumonia and acute respiratory disease syndrome was worldwide estimated during 2010 in 11.9 million. The problem is even bigger when we consider the elderly population that responds to vaccination with a significantly lower efficacy.

Viruses are responsible for a majority of respiratory infections and among them human coronaviruses (CoVs) are the cause of up to 15% of all respiratory problems. Six human CoVs have been described: HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43, HCoV-NL63, HCoV-HKU1, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV.

Our laboratory is focused in the design of vaccines and selection of antivirals to protect against human respiratory CoV infections by modulating the innate immune response in the young and elderly population.

The bosses’ personal skills are quite disrespectful. Dealing lab work with social life is difficult and frustrating, as bosses think work is always the most important point, even more than a relative’s decease or having a child.

New approaches are not welcomed, as old ways are the only valid protocols in their minds. They don’t care about your motivation and find it inappropriate when you want to earn money to work there. Also, they consistently confound productivity with spending (wasting) hours at the lab, just to be there.

Time managing is one of the worst parts. Many group meetings long for a morning discussing unproductive issues, like where the freezer keys should be kept. However, less time is spent organizing data in order to write new publications.

When an experiment doesn’t work, they order you to repeat it unlimitedly or until they assume your suggestions may improve the result.

Importantly, they dangerously fall into questionable ethics, as the results “always” have to meet what they expect to occur. They ask you for graphics with the expected results before the experiment is done. Or, even worse, when the experiment ended with different results. Finally, when the experiment is done, they edit data in a “polishment” procedure to “show clearer the results in a congress” (in their words).
